Before we built our Marina in 2010, this entire landscape was pure farmland, almost unchanged from the 1800s. These fields were inhabited by a poor community of farmers, labourers and their families, living in cottages known as ‘dwellings’ scattered through the fields at the back of beyond - and at a time where houses were literally built in fields with potato patches for a garden, and a flattened track on the grass for a path. They were the canvas of the acclaimed writer Shan F Bullock, who was born nearby on the 17th of May 1865 and used his neighbours and surroundings as the subjects of his books.
Through Shan’s stories, the life of these peasants became known for the very first time. He shone a light into their busy lives- their endless toil, the dark, smoky cottages they reared their families in and the humour and wisdom which they bestowed upon the future generations.
His novel By Thrasna River illustrates how people lived on the site of Killynick Marina and is one of Shan’s most popular works. The characters of the book are instantly memorable, so we named our pods after two: Thady, an honest working man with a large family, hilarious wife and a great respect amongst his mates for his unquestionable common sense, and Rose, a quiet, hopeful, romantic young woman who lives with her eccentric mother and elderly relatives in absolute poverty.
Every year in the local Crom Estate a day is held in memory of the esteemed writer who was born there and lived, for a short time, in what is now our family home.
Our pods are named Rose (with full glass front offering superb views of Thrasna River), Thady and Oiney. We have boats for hire, or you can bring your own boat or jet ski!
